Jelling is considered the “birth certificate of Denmark”: the two runestones erected by King Gorm the Old and his son Harald Bluetooth in the 10th century are the earliest known written mention of the name “Danmark.” Together with two massive burial mounds and a reconstructed palisade complex, Jelling brings the birth of the Danish monarchy to life in one compact location. The site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Around 950, Gorm the Old had the smaller of the two runestones erected for his wife Thyra. His son Harald Bluetooth added a second, larger stone proclaiming his conversion to Christianity and the unification of Denmark.
