When the “Great Heathen Army” conquered York in 866, the city became the capital of a Viking kingdom under the Old Norse name J\u00f3rv\u00edk, controlling large parts of northern England. Excavations in the 1970s at Coppergate uncovered exceptionally well-preserved streets, houses, and everyday objects \u2013 the foundation for one of Europe’s best-known Viking experience museums.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n Under Scandinavian rule, J\u00f3rv\u00edk developed into a flourishing center of trade and craft with its own coinage and far-reaching trade contacts extending to Scandinavia and beyond.
