An eagle, carved into a living back. Few images from the Viking Age are more brutal \u2013 and none more disputed.<\/p>\n
In Snorri Sturluson’s Heimskringla, written around 1230, Jarl Einar cuts the ribs of his defeated rival Halfdan away from the spine and pulls out the lungs \u2013 an “eagle” carved into his back. The Eddic poem Reginsm\u00e1l uses the same formula: a “blood eagle” cut into the back of Sigmund’s killer. Two independent sources \u2013 but both written around 1200, centuries after the events they describe.<\/p>\n
That gap is exactly why scholars stay skeptical. No grave, no skeleton has ever shown clear evidence of the procedure. Some researchers suspect that “carving the eagle on someone’s back” was originally just a figure of speech. In skaldic poetry, “feeding the eagle” simply meant “killing an enemy in battle.” The vivid, literal version may have grown out of that phrase over time.<\/p>\n
In 2022, an anatomical study in the journal Speculum used medical simulation software to test the claim: the procedure would have been physically possible \u2013 but the victim would have bled out within minutes. The elaborate, drawn-out version from the sagas looks more like literary drama than historical report.<\/p>\n
The ritual became widely known through the TV series Vikings, where it appears repeatedly as the peak of Norse brutality. The historical record is far blurrier than the screen suggests.<\/p>\n
Real ritual or wartime rhetoric turned into verse \u2013 the Blood Eagle shows how much the Viking Age was told between fact and fear. That grey zone is exactly what still fascinates us today.<\/p>\n
