Farmer and poet Sveinbj\u00f6rn Beinteinsson founds the \u00c1satr\u00faarf\u00e9lagi\u00f0, the &#8220;fellowship of the \u00c6sir faith,&#8221; together with a handful of like-minded followers. A year later, the Icelandic state officially recognizes it as a religion \u2013 nearly a thousand years after Iceland converted to Christianity at the <a href=\"https:\/\/hrafn-wikinger.com\/en\/vikings\/society\/thing-norse-assembly\/\">Althing<\/a> in the year 1000.<\/p>\n<h2>What Asatru Means<\/h2>\n<p>Asatru, literally &#8220;faith in the \u00c6sir,&#8221; presents itself as a revival of pre-Christian Norse religion: seasonal festivals, offerings (bl\u00f3t) to <a href=\"https:\/\/hrafn-wikinger.com\/en\/mythology\/gods\/odin\/\">Odin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hrafn-wikinger.com\/en\/mythology\/gods\/thor\/\">Thor<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hrafn-wikinger.com\/en\/mythology\/gods\/freya\/\">Freyja<\/a> and the other gods, gatherings held outdoors rather than in churches. Beinteinsson himself spoke less of doctrine than of a connection to the land and the wish that Icelanders could nurture a faith of their own, not an imported one.<\/p>\n<h2>Growth and Reality<\/h2>\n<p>The movement didn&#8217;t stay confined to Iceland. Today, the Icelandic \u00c1satr\u00faarf\u00e9lagi\u00f0 counts more than 4,000 members \u2013 one of the country&#8217;s largest non-Christian communities \u2013 and has inspired offshoots across Scandinavia, Germany, and North America.<\/p>\n<p>One thing matters for understanding it correctly: Asatru is not an unbroken, thousand-year-old tradition. Centuries separate the last public bl\u00f3t of the Viking Age from the founding in 1972, with no organized practice in between.
