A semicircular rampart, nearly nine meters high, in what is today Schleswig-Holstein. Behind it once stood Hedeby \u2013 Old Norse Hei\u00f0ab\u00fd \u2013 one of the largest and most important trading towns in Northern Europe during the 9th and 10th centuries.<\/p>\n
Its location was no accident. Hedeby sat at the narrowest point of the Jutland peninsula, where the North Sea and the Baltic almost touch. Goods only had to cross a few kilometers of land instead of the dangerous route around Skagen. Merchants from the Frankish Empire, Frisia, Scandinavia, and the Slavic Baltic coast met at its market. Excavations have turned up glass beads from the Rhineland, Arab silver coins, and Frisian cloth.<\/p>\n
The town was politically contested, too. Around 808, the Danish king Godfred deliberately relocated merchants from the Slavic trading post of Reric to Hedeby to control the trade routes. The nearby Danevirke, a massive border wall against the Franks to the south, offered extra protection. Chroniclers like the Frankish monk Rimbert even report an early Christian mission in Hedeby \u2013 while the town remained, at the same time, a center of pagan craftsmanship.<\/p>\n
Around 1066, Hedeby is destroyed in an attack and never fully rebuilt; trade shifts to nearby Schleswig. What remains today lies largely beneath fields and a museum \u2013 and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, together with the neighboring Danevirke wall.<\/p>\n
