Then, in 2017, the DNA analysis: the skeleton unambiguously belongs to a woman. The study lands like a bombshell\u2013within academia and far beyond it. Critics object that weapon grave goods alone don’t prove warrior status; proponents counter that this exact equipment would never have been questioned in a man’s grave.<\/p>\n
The shieldmaiden herself\u2013the armed warrior woman of the sagas\u2013is older than any excavation. Names like Lagertha<\/a> or the valkyries appear in Saxo Grammaticus’s Gesta Danorum and in Eddic poems, often with a supernatural edge. Whether such figures reflect real women or are literary invention remains disputed among scholars to this day.<\/p>\n What stands firm: women in the Viking Age owned property of their own, could obtain divorce, and could run a household independently\u2013unusual rights for their time. Whether this regularly produced women warriors too remains an open question. The Birka grave proves: at least once, it did.<\/p>\n
