The Earliest Traces<\/h2>\n

Who were these men? The earliest trace leads to the Hrafnsm\u00e1l, a praise poem for King Harald Fairhair. The skald \u00de\u00f3rbj\u00f6rn Hornklofi wrote it in the late ninth century. He describes berserkers as an elite unit of the king’s. Fighting alongside them are the \u00falfhe\u00f0nar, the “wolf-skins.” Two names, one fear. They were carried across the North Sea, in ships with white shields and Frankish swords.<\/p>\n

Three centuries later, Snorri Sturluson takes up the image again. In his Ynglinga saga he calls the berserkers Odin<\/a>’s own men. They fight “raging like dogs or wolves.” They bite their shields. They are strong as bears. Blades and flames can do nothing to them. This state is called berserkergang. It caused such fear that Icelandic law explicitly banned it centuries later.<\/p>\n

A Frenzy Without Explanation<\/h2>\n

What lay behind this frenzy? No one knows for certain. Many know the fly agaric theory. But it does not come from the Viking Age. A Swedish naturalist proposed it in the eighteenth century. It is a modern guess, not a handed-down truth.<\/p>\n

Over a thousand years have passed. The word berserker has lost none of its terror, even though its secret remains unsolved to this day.<\/p>\n
