Why visit this place?
Ribe is considered Scandinavia’s oldest surviving town. A seasonal marketplace emerged here as early as 700-710 AD, which grew into a permanent trading town. Visitors to Ribe experience both a modern museum with thousands of original finds and a lively open-air museum where Viking Age crafts are demonstrated.
Historical background
From the early 8th to the 10th century, Ribe was a regionally significant trading and craft centre with its own minting of coins. Archaeological finds document glass bead, comb and bronze production as well as far-reaching trade contacts around the North Sea. Unlike many other Viking Age trading posts, the town remained continuously inhabited and is still thriving today.
