Hrafn is a digital knowledge archive dedicated to Norse mythology, the Viking Age, and their traces in modern video games. This page answers the most common questions about Hrafn – openly and without detours.

1. What is Hrafn?

Hrafn collects, organizes, and explains knowledge about Norse mythology and the Viking Age in one place – from god profiles to historical crafts to the traces of this world in current games. The goal is an archive where both the curious and avid readers can quickly find their way around.

2. Why the name “Hrafn”?

Hrafn is Old Norse for “raven”. Ravens – most notably Odin’s companions Huginn and Muninn (“thought” and “memory”) – represent knowledge carried through the world in Norse mythology. That is exactly the ambition of this site.

3. How is content researched and how are sources checked?

Content is based on established primary and secondary sources – including the Poetic Edda, the Prose Edda, the sagas, and recognized academic literature on Norse mythology and the Viking Age. Where sources contradict each other or research is unsettled, this is made transparent rather than smoothed over.

4. Who is behind Hrafn?

Hrafn is an independent, editorially maintained project. The person legally responsible for the content is named in the Legal Notice.

5. What role does artificial intelligence play in creating the content?

Part of Hrafn’s text production is drafted with AI assistance and then editorially reviewed before publication. This transparency matters to us: AI helps with the draft, but editorial review and approval remain a human step.

6. How is this site funded?

Hrafn is funded in part through its own products in the Shop as well as affiliate links (e.g. to the Amazon Associates programme) on recommended books and products. If someone makes a purchase through one of these links, Hrafn may earn a small commission – at no extra cost to the buyer. Recommendations are chosen independently of any potential commission.

We deliberately forgo most traditional display advertising, so the reading experience and calm design of Hrafn aren’t disrupted. An exception is the Rune Translator, where individual ads may appear to help fund this free tool.
