Why this place?
Birka on the island of Björkö was one of the most important trading hubs of the Baltic Sea region from the 8th to the 10th century – and to this day it can only be reached by boat, making a visit a true journey into the past. Together with the neighboring Hovgården, Birka has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Particularly notable: around 829, the first documented Christian mission in present-day Sweden took place here, led by the monk Ansgar.
Historical Background
Birka was founded around 750–760 AD and for roughly two centuries was a central hub for trade between Scandinavia, the Baltic region, and the Orient. Over 3,000 graves – many richly furnished – bear witness to a wealthy, internationally connected society. Around 975 the town was abandoned, likely because the water level of Lake Mälaren changed and the harbor lost its significance.
