Why this place?
Oslo is home to the Oseberg, Gokstad, and Tune ships – the best-preserved Viking ships ever found, recovered from 9th-century chieftain and royal graves. A visit to Oslo combines maritime Viking history with one of Northern Europe’s most exciting museum construction projects: the new “Museum of the Viking Age” is currently being built on Bygdøy.
Historical Background
The ships were discovered between 1867 and 1904 in burial mounds around the Oslo Fjord and served as the final resting place for high-ranking individuals – richly furnished with sleighs, carts, and everyday objects. They rank among the most important archaeological finds in Scandinavia and offer unique insights into Viking Age shipbuilding and seafaring.
Current Status: The traditional Viking Ship House on Bygdøy has been closed since October 2021 due to a new building project. The collection is being rebuilt as the new “Museum of the Viking Age,” with reopening currently announced for 2027 – though no specific date has been confirmed yet. For up-to-date information, it’s recommended to check the official museum website before planning your trip.
