The raid on Lindisfarne monastery on 8 June 793 is regarded as the moment the Viking Age entered the consciousness of Christian Europe. The island had previously been a major center of Anglo-Saxon scholarship – the famous Lindisfarne Gospels were created here. A visit combines dramatic history with one of the most striking coastal landscapes in Northern England.
Historical Background
The monastery on Lindisfarne had been a spiritual center of European standing since the 7th century. The sudden raid by Scandinavian warriors in 793 – with plundering and violence against the monastic community – shocked contemporary chroniclers and is still often described as the symbolic beginning of the Viking Age in Europe, even though isolated contacts likely occurred earlier.
