Why this place?
When the “Great Heathen Army” conquered York in 866, the city became the capital of a Viking kingdom under the Old Norse name Jórvík, controlling large parts of northern England. Excavations in the 1970s at Coppergate uncovered exceptionally well-preserved streets, houses, and everyday objects – the foundation for one of Europe’s best-known Viking experience museums.
Historical Background
Under Scandinavian rule, Jórvík developed into a flourishing center of trade and craft with its own coinage and far-reaching trade contacts extending to Scandinavia and beyond. The waterlogged soil conditions at Coppergate preserved organic material – wood, leather, textiles – in exceptional quality, making York one of the most important Viking Age excavation sites in Britain.
